This session sets the foundation for a reading environment. We will explore how to promote a love of reading through the use of graded readers. 

With simple, practical activities, tested in the classroom over many years, teachers will learn how to create a reading environment that will also lead to better learning.

Faites comme Léo et Théo et jouez avec le Cadre et les Compétences

Depuis 2001 le Cadre Européen Commun est devenu un document officiel, commun à toute l’Europe. Il contient les lignes directrices que nous, professeurs de langues étrangères, suivons pour décrire les compétences acquises par nos élèves.

En 2018, un volume complémentaire a été publié, il contient des nouveautés intéressantes avec des descripteurs pour les jeunes entre 7 et 10 ans, qui sont à la base de la méthode Léo et Théo.

Ce webinaire a donc pour objectif d’examiner de plus près quelques- uns de ces descripteurs et quelques compétences du Cadre des Compétences Clés grâce à des exemples concrets présents dans la méthode.

• Intervenant

Anna Maria Crimi. Licenciée en Langues et Littératures étrangères modernes, elle a été pendant plusieurs années professeure de FLE en France. Actuellement elle est enseignante de FLE en Italie.

Formatrice de professeurs pour le Ministère de l’Éducation Nationale Italienne, elle est également formatrice pour les TICE et auteure d’activités numériques.

Auteure de nombreux articles parus dans Le Français dans le monde et dans d’autres revues spécialisées font d’elle une experte dans les activités ludiques en classe de FLE et dans l’approche actionnelle.

Un apprenant engagé est avant tout acteur de son apprentissage. Le public adolescents soulève souvent des questions: comment les motiver ? Quelles activités proposer ? Comment gérer la classe ? Nous découvrirons donc ensemble des techniques et activités à mettre en place afin de dynamiser vos cours.

Au cours des dernières années, elle a travaillé dans plusieurs alliances françaises et Instituts français d’Espagne. Elle est également auteure.

How to invent and use reading activities that are engaging, creative and effective

We will examine and evaluate a wide range of after-reading activities. In particular, the speaker will show how to exploit the many things that a story does not tell us and how to ‘intervene’ in a story by changing it or adding to it, techniques which ensure that students will think and be creative.

We will also borrow some methodology from drama teaching and from CLIL. We will end by suggesting ways to explore connections across cultures and school subjects.

The activities will be exemplified by working on a traditional Scottish story taken from the first book of the World Stories series published by V&V Books.

• Speaker:

Robert Hill. Robert Hill graduated in English literature from Oxford University and taught in Spain, Greece and England before moving to Italy. He taught English for many years at the universities of Verona and Milan and is now an author and teacher-trainer.

He is co-author of World Stories, a new 4-volume collection of traditional stories from around the world published by V&V Books. He has given talks in Latin America and Spain over many years and is looking forward to meeting old friends online in this webinar!

Challenging students to read and think critically

Being a critical thinker is an essential 21st century skill in our modern societies and in our global Marketplace. Thus, it’s important that we teachers develop critical thinking routines in our EFL classroom.

This session will begin by inviting you to experience various reading activities and tasks in the Penguin Reader’s collection that encourage students to develop their critical thinking skills in a conscious and scaffolded manner.

We will then move on to analysing the intellectual traits and experience several practical activities that allow students to become aware of the bias associated with our emotions and how this impacts our decision-making process in a negative manner.

Next, we will take a closer look at an example of how we can encourage students to use their Critical thinking skills to come up with creative English learning products. 

By the end of the session participants will have a list of ready to use Critical thinking stories and activities to take back into their classrooms. The session will end with a 20-minute Q&A session.

• Speaker:

Vanessa Reis Esteves. Vanessa Reis has been teaching EFL in Portugal for the past 23 years. She holds a Master’s degree in Anglo American studies and is an international teacher trainer.

She presently writes course material for EFL students and teaches at Escola Superior de Educação. Her current areas of interest are developing students’ Critical Thinking and 21st Century skills.
